Accommodation scholarships for undergraduate students

Accommodation scholarships support new students enrolling at Massey University. Applicants should have a record of academic excellence, leadership, and community engagement and contribution.

Tenure and value

A total of five scholarships will be awarded annually. The value of each scholarship shall be $5,000 per annum for qualified Massey enrolled students. Two scholarships will be allocated to students living at the Auckland campus, one general accommodation scholarship and one Māori student accommodation scholarship. Three scholarships will be allocated to students living at the Manawatū campus, two general accommodation scholarships and one Pasifika student accommodation scholarship.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Intending to enrol for full-time study and for a full academic year.
  • Applied to live in student accommodation at either Massey University's Auckland or Manawatū campus.
  • Live in a hall of residence for the year following the award of the scholarship.
  • Be a New Zealand Resident and school leaver.
  • Study at Massey University's Auckland or Manawatū campus.
  • Must be a new Massey undergraduate student who has not studied at another tertiary institution, irrespective of country.
  • Must be prepared to enter into a residential agreement with Massey University Student Accommodation Auckland or Student Accommodation Manawatū.

All applicants need to meet the entry criteria for the programme they intend to enrol in at Massey University.

School leavers must be able to:

  • demonstrate leadership at school or within the community, and
  • provide a personal statement or testimony, written by the applicant, including a justification as to why they should be considered for the scholarship.

If a scholarship recipient leaves Massey's student accommodation for any reason, their scholarship will be terminated immediately and a lump sum applied to their account on a pro-rata basis and they will be required to pay this sum immediately before departure.

Selection criteria

Applications are assessed based on evidence of academic excellence, leadership, and community engagement and contribution:

  • Academic excellence.
  • A record of excellence across subject areas relevant to the proposed course of study at Massey University, with supporting record of excellence and merit in other subjects.
  • Leadership: Both in and out of school, as evidenced by leadership roles, skills and qualities, development and growth. This may include, for example, awards for leadership, engagement in clubs and organisations, opportunities for leadership growth and development, service-related engagement, marae responsibilities, church duties, or leading change initiatives.
  • Community engagement and contribution: Evidence of contributions to the local, national and/or international community. This may include, for example, working with whānau, iwi or hapū, community action projects, marae engagement, church service, Scouts, council work, volunteering, education community partnerships, and awards or recognition for service.

Applicants must provide a completed scholarship application form. A personal statement or testimony separately in written, audio or video form. Copies of school reports for Year 12 and 13 and evidence of acceptance into Massey University, when available.

Selection panel

The Accommodation Scholarship Review Team is responsible for awarding the accommodation scholarships. The Accommodation Scholarship Panel reserves the right to not award all scholarships in a year if there are no or insufficient suitable candidates apply.

Payment

The scholarship is in New Zealand dollars and is credited towards the accommodation fees the last 12 to 15 weeks of the residential agreement. The scholarship credit cannot be applied to any administration or contingency fees.

Conditions of the scholarship

These scholarships are not tenable with other Massey University scholarships.

Closing date

30 August in the year prior to the scholarship being tenable.
