Overview
This micro-credential introduces students to the fundamental concepts and methods used to understand and measure population health. Students will explore basic epidemiological principles and their practical application in public health practice.
The course examines key tools and indicators used to assess population health. Students will analyse major public health challenges both in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally, developing an understanding of disease patterns in populations.

Successful students will receive 5 credits added to their academic record at Massey.
Completion of this course, plus the Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Public Health and Understanding Public Health in Aotearoa New Zealand courses, can be used as recognition of prior learning for 231106 Introduction to Public Health in the Bachelor of Health Science.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:
- explain basic epidemiological concepts and methods
- describe key tools and indicators to measure population health
- describe patterns of diseases in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.
