The Mona and Rex McClenaghan Veterinary Scholarship was established to support talented veterinarians to pursue postgraduate study primarily into canine health, and welfare, including the societal and personal benefits of pet ownership.

This scholarship has been established to remember and honour Mona and Rex’s lifelong love for all types of animals.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone with a passion for canine health and welfare, or for pet ownership, and who is intending to undertake research in this area.

What you'll be studying

This is a research scholarship. You will be enrolled or intending to enrol in a Master of Veterinary Studies or a Doctor of Philosophy within the School of Veterinary Science at Massey University.

Typically, either a master’s scholarship or a doctoral scholarship will be awarded annually, to be determined by the quality of applicants and available funds.

Eligibility criteria

You will be:

  • enrolled or intending to enrol in a Master of Veterinary Studies or a Doctor of Philosophy within the School of Veterinary Science, Massey University
  • undertaking research into the health and welfare of dogs, or undertaking research into the impact of pet ownership on owners
  • New Zealand citizens or permanent residents are preferred, but international student applications will be accepted and considered

Application checklist

Include the following with your application:

  • a research outline for your proposed research and how this research aligns with the scholarship intent
  • a reference from your supervisor supporting your application and demonstrating your suitability for the scholarship
  • a copy of your academic transcripts for your full tertiary level background
  • a statement demonstrating your passion for canine health and animal welfare and how you are suited for this award

About the donor

Mona and Rex McClenaghan

Mona McClenaghan lived most of her life in Grey Lynn, Auckland. Over her lifetime, Mona and her family kept goldfish, sheep and chickens on the property, bred dogs (Afghan Hounds), and had family pets including Airedale Terriers, cats, rabbits, birds and Texas Tortoises. Mona’s younger son, Rex, worked in show business in Sydney, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Hawaii.
