Applications which are received in December 2025 or January 2026 will not be considered until late-January 2026. You can expect an outcome in your Student Portal by February 2026.
The Pūtea Tautoko - Doctoral Financial Support Grant was established by Massey University with combined funds donated by the Massey University Foundation and doctoral examiners who have contributed their examination fee to this fund.
Applications are accepted year-round and assessed on a rolling basis.
Selection will occur at the start of each month for applications received in the previous month.
Who we're looking for
These grants aim to support doctoral students who are facing exceptional financial hardship caused by an unforeseen set of circumstances such as, but not limited to, illness, job loss, injury, family loss, or natural disaster.
Eligibility criteria
You will be currently enrolled in a doctoral degree and be making satisfactory progress in your research. Students who are on an extension or have submitted their thesis for examination are not eligible for this grant.
Application checklist
Include the following with your application:
- a reference letter from supervisor on research progress
- a statement explaining why you are applying for this grant and how it will help your current financial circumstances. Provide as much information as possible.
- any additional supporting information which will help with the selection of this grant (optional)

When choosing our recipients we will consider your financial circumstances and any events which have contributed to this. We will also take into account other financial support you have sought and/or received during your candidature.
