The Peter Hawkins Food Technology Scholarship was established in memory of Peter Hawkins who passed away in June 2024. Its purpose is to help the recipient become part of the New Zealand Food Industry, something which was dear to Peter’s heart.

Peter founded Hawkins Watts Limited, one of New Zealand’s most respected and successful food ingredient businesses, in 1992. Peter was passionate about the food industry and was a member of the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST) since 1977, including stints on the National Executive Committee, and was also the Chair of the Auckland Branch. Peter also managed the NZIFST national magazine “The Food Technologist” and chaired the Institute’s Publications Committee for Food NZ. Right to the end of his life, Peter saw the immense value of the NZ food industry and actively encouraged his team to be part of that. This scholarship endeavours to continue that passion
