Massey University is excited to offer a second residency in veterinary anaesthesiology to fulfil qualifications for the ECVAA and/or ACVAA. This is a three-year full time program, with a required Masters being completed concurrently. Only Australian or New Zealand residents may apply due to funding restrictions

The successful resident will work in a vibrant academic teaching hospital with a varied caseload of complex and interesting cases. The program is engaging and supportive with three supervising faculty members (one ECVAA, one ECVAA/ACVAA). We strongly support the development of locoregional expertise in our residents, having dedicated equipment for ultrasound-guided nerve blocks. Our faculty have an excellent track record of residents completing research projects and being qualified to sit the specialty exam on time.

Our residents enjoy an exceptional work-life balance. They are given ample off-clinic time for studying and research and are supported in attending a specialty conference in their second or third year. The resident will provide emergency out-of-hours service one week in five with direct support from faculty and earn additional compensation for this emergency work.

The residency is scheduled to start in February 2026, although applications will be considered until the position is filled. The successful candidate must have completed a 1 year rotating internship (with no more than 30% being emergency duty) or 2 years of equivalent private practice experience. Applicants must hold a BVSc degree registerable in New Zealand and qualify to register as a candidate for the degree of Masters of Veterinary Studies (MVS). The value of the scholarship is NZ $46,425 per annum (tax free) for three years, and tuition and fees are paid by the program.

Massey University was the highest-ranking veterinary school in Australasia in the 2024 QS rankings and is a compact, friendly campus. It is known for its strong research culture, world-class facilities and strong community vibes. The School of Veterinary Science has recently completed a $70 million teaching and research building and the hospital is well-equipped for advanced anaesthesiology. Palmerston North is centrally located in the North Island with excellent connections to the whole of New Zealand. It is surrounded by the great outdoors with excellent local walking and cycling tracks, and easy access to both coasts. It is a vibrant university city with the highest number of restaurants per capita in New Zealand.
