The Te Ranga Tai Kura Māori Creative Practice Scholarship acknowledges kaupapa Māori place-based approaches to postgraduate research and creative practice. The scholarship provides a stipend to the value of $15,000 (for a 120 credit Masters Programme) or $22,500 (for a 180 credit Masters Programme) to support a Māori student to undertake a Master's qualification within Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts.
Te Ranga Tai Kura is a group comprising Tangata Whenua and Tangata Moana creative academics collectively responsible for leading Toi Māori and Toi Moana education within Toi Rauwhārangi. Grounded in ancestral knowledge, cultural responsibility, and collective leadership, Te Ranga Tai Kura brings together expertise across design, fine arts, screen arts, music, to nurture learners, strengthen Māori and Indigenous creative practice, and carry mātauranga into future generations.
This scholarship supports postgraduate creative practice research across the disciplines represented within Toi Rauwhārangi. It prioritises proposals that advance Māori worldviews, strengthens Māori communities, and contributes to Māori futures. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate connections to mātauranga toi Māori and one or more of the following research priorities:
- iwi and hapū development,
- giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and
- relationships with te taiao.
Who we're looking for
We're looking for candidates with whakapapa Māori enrolling in a Master's qualification within Toi Rauwhārangi, whose research proposal demonstrates a clear, well-defined contribution to one or more of the three focus areas.
You must:
- Be enrolled in a Master’s qualification within Toi Rauwhārangi College of Creative Arts, Massey University.
- Be enrolled in Toi Ātea 4 (298753), or Māori Research Methodologies for Creative Practice (298730).
- Whakapapa Māori

Application checklist
Include the following with your application:
- A research proposal (one page maximum) outlining your project and its alignment with one of the three focus areas
- Images, links, audio files etc. of previous or current projects/creative practice (six pages maximum)
- A portfolio with relevant links, images, video or audio content
- A portfolio of other relevant experience, creative outputs, research projects and activities, community leadership or cultural contributions
- Transcripts if not currently studying with at Massey
Selection considerations
When choosing recipients, we will consider the quality and clarity of the research proposal, its alignment with the three focus areas and academic achievement.
