Students who study at KSU can experience modern life in Japan and also see, feel and taste the traditions of the city through the unrivalled number of historical sites, sounds crafts and flavours waiting to be discovered. Located in the scenic north, Kyoto is the old capital and a cultural hub of Japan. It is a city in which traditional culture and progressive academic studies coexist to produce great talent, unique industries, and global firms.  

All students who are taking their courses in Japanese or studying the language are matched with a Japanese buddy who can assist with study and daily life.

Language requirements

You can study all of your courses in English at KSU without meeting any Japanese language requirements. In order to take Japanese language classes or study your courses in Japanese, you must meet two of the following requirements:

  • Minimum score of 70 on the Japanese Computerised Adaptive Test (J-CAT). The results of this free online test must be submitted your your application to KSU.
  • Have successfully completed Massey courses 242.101 and 242.102.
  • Level 3 on the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JPLT).

Japanese language classes

Exchange students complete a placement test upon arrival and are enrolled in Japanese language classes based on those test results and an interview. For beginner to intermediate students, there are four 90 minute classes each week which cover the four skills of reading, writing, listening and reading. For more advanced students, classes are based on topical issues such as business communication skills and academic writing, etc.

Insurance

All exchange students must carry travel insurance from their home country for the entire period of the stay in Japan. Students staying for two semesters at KSU are required to register for Japanese National Health Insurance.

Certificate of health

Students need to undertake a medical examination within 6 months of the intended study period.

Accommodation

Single and shared rooms are available for students at the International house which is a modern facility located within walking distance of the campus.

Semesters

The Spring semester runs from the end of March to August. The Autumn semester runs from September to February.

Visas

It is advisable that you contact the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate to obtain further information concerning requirements for your visa application. Each student is responsible for obtaining a Japanese visa prior to departure for Japan.
