Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland residents looking for effective ways to manage anxiety now have the opportunity to join a new group therapy programme launching at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s Albany Psychology Clinic on 6 May.

Senior Clinical Psychologist Dr Kirsty Furness, who will be leading the programme, says the aim of the group is to provide a low-cost service for those who don’t have access to other mental health services.

“The course is ideal for anyone looking to make a positive change in their life. With a focus on understanding anxiety and how it works, as well as talk and learn from other people who understand how you feel.”

Dr Furness explains that the groups are based on cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), which provides a practical approach to help manage and overcome problems.

“CBT has been very well-researched and is a short-term, skills-focused therapy that enables participants to learn new strategies for coping with anxiety. Group therapy can be extremely helpful because you get more support in a group environment. Everyone gets together to find a solution.”

The group sessions will run every Tuesday from 11.30am to 1pm for eight weeks, at the Centre for Psychology on Level 3 of the North Shore Library Building, 229 Dairy Flat Highway, Albany Village. It is one of a range of community programmes provided by the Albany Psychology Clinic and is available to people aged 18 and over, with a maximum of 10 participants per group. There is an initial $30 assessment fee and sessions cost $30 each.

If you’re keen to get involved with the anxiety group but would prefer to meet online, another option called e-therapy is available for free. Dr Furness and a team of psychological support facilitators, will track your individual progress and follow up in a way that works for you. Having someone track your progress means you are more likely to benefit.
