Bringing imagination to life: Massey launches concept design programme in Auckland

Thursday 5 November 2026

From creating fantastical creatures and characters to building immersive worlds for games, film and animation, aspiring creatives in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland will have the opportunity to turn their imagination into a career.

Creation by concept design graduate Eden Laing.

The opportunity comes as Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University introduces its nationally recognised concept design programme at its Ōtehā Auckland campus in 2027.

Offered in Auckland for the first time, the programme will give students the opportunity to develop their creative talents through drawing, design, visual storytelling and emerging digital technologies, while building connections with professionals working across the creative industries.

Based at Massey's campus in Albany, the programme is Auckland's first dedicated university-level concept design offering, bringing together creative exploration, technical skills and industry-connected learning.

Students will explore the art of creating characters, creatures, environments and imaginative worlds, developing the skills to bring original ideas to life across games, film, animation and other emerging creative fields.

The programme places a strong emphasis on experimentation and creative development, with students learning from practising artists, designers and screen professionals who bring industry experience and connections across Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

Director for Innovation and External Management Astrid Visser says, "We are excited to be bringing our industry driven concept design programme to Auckland, and the high-spec new teaching space and technology this new cohort will get to experience. With a strong digital focus, the programme creates exciting opportunities to strengthen our industry connections across the region, and creating new opportunities by positioning students within our Innovation Complex eco-system."

Throughout their studies, students will have opportunities to experiment with new technologies, develop their individual creative styles and build portfolios showcasing their work and ideas.

First-year students will undertake courses including Concept Design: Imagine and Concept Design: Worldbuilding, alongside studies exploring professional cultures and critical perspectives in digital worlds.

Students can also broaden their creative practice through electives in areas such as game development, animation, creative writing, drawing, digital asset creation and emerging creative technologies.

The programme will be based in Massey's Innovation Complex, a contemporary, sustainable facility featuring purpose-built creative spaces designed to encourage collaboration, experimentation and focused creative practice.

Students will also benefit from opportunities to connect with other disciplines across the university, combining their creative interests with a wider range of skills and perspectives.

The introduction of concept design in Auckland expands access to Massey's established creative arts education, offering students in the region a new pathway to pursue their passion for visual storytelling and imaginative design.

The university is now inviting applications for its founding Auckland cohort in 2027, with places limited.
