Courting competition with second Staff vs Student game of the year

Thursday 20 June 2024

The second event in the 2024 Staff vs Student sport series took place last week on the Auckland campus, featuring an energetic basketball match.

The event provided a fun break from work and study for the cohort, with 12 staff members and eight students competing. Despite the spirited competition, the atmosphere remained relaxed and enjoyable, emphasising the main goal of getting active and enjoying each other’s company.

The student team benefitted from having the likes of University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand basketballer David Jovanovic on their side, along with other high-level club players. This reflected heavily in the first half, with students well and truly controlling the game.

While half-time saw some adjusting of the score, with bonus points added in favour of the staff team, they managed to keep pace with the students in the second half, finishing the game with a final score of 55-all. It was clear that the students showed a stronger game on the day, but both teams left the court satisfied with their efforts.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students and Global Engagement Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly and Auckland Recreation Centre Manager Richard Hollings were praised as standout players for the staff team. Dr McGonagle Daly says the shared laughter and camaraderie amongst colleagues and students was truly inspiring to witness.

“Such occasions highlight the significance of maintaining an active lifestyle and embracing moments of healthy competition within our busy schedules. While I must acknowledge that keeping pace with our talented students left many of our staff appreciating the option of rolling substitutions, the collective enjoyment and sense of community made it all worthwhile.”

Mr Hollings echoed these sentiments and is already looking forward to the next event.

“It was a great turnout from both students and staff. Even though it was played in great spirit, there was an element of competitiveness amongst both teams. To be able to get together at the Recreation Centre and have some fun, enjoy each other’s company and meet some new people ensured the event was a success. I know the staff team are looking forward to the next game and there has even been talk of running some practice sessions so we are primed and ready to take the win next time!”
