Kōrero Corner, a 45-minute show in the style of TVNZ's Breakfast, is the culmination of both the undergraduate and post-graduate Advanced Audio-Visual Journalism papers, taught in collaboration with the Bachelor of Screen Arts on Massey’s Wellington campus.

From concept through to execution, the show is entirely written, produced, edited, presented, directed and run by the students. All of the video packages, inserts, graphics, set design and other aspects of the show are also their own work.

Journalism Lecturer Carla Gray, who co-taught the course with Lecturer Charlotte Shipman and Senior Lecturer Gwen Isaac, says the collaboration gives students a unique opportunity to create television packages that are then played out in a live broadcast.

"Creating a live show is so much more satisfying than just handing an assessment in to your lecturers. Students are given the opportunity to lean into their disciplines such as directing, camera and sound with the added pressure of live broadcast. Both cohorts learn from and teach each other so much.”

This is the second year of the collaboration between Journalism and Screen Arts. Kōrero Corner is adding to the Wellington campus’ strong culture of live production that also includes a weekly radio current affairs programme, The Rundown, which airs on Wellington Access Radio in the first semester of each year.

Students created Kōrero Corner over the last 12-week semester. The effort required long hours and was a steep learning curve for students, but they worked hard as a group to create a quality production. Technical support was provided by Bex Wilson-Jennings, Nosiphi Mapukata and Adam Dransfield.
