Massey Communication ranks among world’s top 100 in ShanghaiRanking

Massey’s Communication subject has retained its place in the 76–100 band globally, which reflects the research performance of the academic staff who design and teach Massey’s Communication courses.

Communication brings together research and teaching across areas including journalism, media studies, public relations, digital communication and storytelling.

Head of School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication Professor Bill Fish says the result reflects a sustained collective effort from researchers and their community partners, and that students are the first to benefit from these results

“The researchers behind this ranking are in our classrooms. They lead the curriculum, they teach the courses, and they bring the best of the world’s communication scholarship to students here in Aotearoa.”

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects assesses universities across 57 academic subjects, using measures of research performance. The Communication ranking considers factors including research output, research quality, research impact, academic leadership and international collaboration.

The ranking recognises the quality and breadth of research being carried out across Massey’s School of Humanities, Media and Creative Communication, and the Centre for Culture-Centered Approach to Research and Evaluation (CARE).

Academics work across issues including digital participation and engagement, Asian futures and technology, community engagement with migrant and Indigenous communities, health communication and community-led interventions, academic freedom, antiracism and social change communication. In community engagement and social change communication, Massey researchers rank among the top scholars in the world.

This work looks at how communication shapes the way people participate in society, access information and work with communities to address issues that affect their lives. The ranking comes as Massey marks 50 years of Communication teaching and 60 years of journalism education, reflecting a long history of research-led teaching in the discipline.

Only 200 institutions worldwide are included in the published Communication ShanghaiRanking, from around 2,000 universities across approximately 100 countries and regions assessed each year.
