Ms Owens brings more than two decades’ experience in publishing, spanning editorial leadership and publishing education to the role. She led the long-running graduate diploma in publishing at Whitireia Polytechnic from 2015 to 2025. Before that, she produced highly illustrated, award-winning books as managing editor of Te Papa Press.

She has also contributed widely to the book sector, judging both the Publishers Association of New Zealand Book Design Awards and the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards. She co-edited Everything I Know About Books: An Insider Look at Publishing in Aotearoa, published in 2023. Ms Owens holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and the English Language from Victoria University of Wellington.

Ms Owens will take up the role from 2 March and Ms Legat will remain involved with the Press to support a smooth transition.

Speaking about her appointment, Ms Owens says she is excited to join the team.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Massey University Press. It will be an honour to work with Nicola and build on the legacy that she has created.”

Ms Legat says she welcomes the transition and looks forward to supporting her successor.

“I am delighted to be able to pass leadership to someone of Odessa Owens’ calibre. She is the perfect fit and I look forward to both supporting her as part of a smooth transition and to continuing to publish award-winning books for the Press.”

Massey University Provost Professor Giselle Byrnes says the Press holds a special place within the university.

“The Press is a precious jewel for the university. Since its establishment, Nicola has built the Press into a highly regarded publishing house, widely recognised for its intelligent, high quality and beautiful books. I want to acknowledge her outstanding leadership and willingness to remain as part of the Massey University Press team and to warmly welcome Odessa to Massey.”
