The series, which has spanned all three Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University campuses this year, saw Ōtehā take centre court for basketball, drawing a fantastic turnout of staff and students, with an enthusiastic crowd cheering them on.
The fast-paced match revealed equal determination and energy from both teams. As they went head-to-head, players traded impressive three-pointers, slick passes and spirited defence, along with plenty of good humour throughout.
As the clock ticked down, the students began to pull ahead, their teamwork moving them into a solid lead. While the staff fought valiantly, the students maintained momentum right to the final buzzer, scoring one last hoop to clinch victory by 11 points, with a final score of 61 to 50.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Students and Global Engagement Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly, who joined the staff team, says the event’s significance went beyond the scoreboard.
“It’s these events that remind us how great sport can be in bringing people together. Taking a break from our day-to-day routines to play and cheer alongside each other builds connections and strengthens our campus community. Everyone’s energy and enthusiasm made it a wonderful game, and I look forward a rematch.”
Certificate in Foundation Studies Brooke Lockyer says she joined the student team to meet new people and get involved in campus life.
“It was a fun way to get some exercise and connect with staff and students I hadn’t met before. I really enjoyed the relaxed, social atmosphere, and it would be great to see more events like this, maybe even football or volleyball."
The Staff vs Student sporting series continues with two more exciting matchups: a netball game on 10 September at the Manawatū campus, and a volleyball clash on 24 September in Wellington.
