With just five years left to meet the 2030 deadline for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2025 Aotearoa Sustainable Development Goals Summit is shaping up to be a rallying point for real change.

The Summit, which will be hosted by Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University on 4–5 September on the university’s Manawatū campus, will bring together changemakers, academics, students, community leaders, policymakers and industry innovators from across the motu.

Under the theme Getting it right! Sustainable production and consumption in Aotearoa, this two-day event will challenge and inspire attendees, while equipping them with the knowledge and tools to make lasting impact.

The programme will feature keynote speakers, interactive panels, hands-on workshops and valuable networking opportunities. Key themes include climate justice, te ao Māori approaches to sustainability, social equity and systems change.

Delegates can choose from a range of breakout sessions on topics such as sustainable cities, financing for impact, ocean sustainability, food sovereignty, transforming mining, waste reduction, rangatahi leadership and more.

Professors Regina Scheyvens and Glenn Banks from the School of People, Environment and Planning will be co-convening the Summit. Professor Scheyvens says urgency is a driving force behind the event.

“With 2030 fast approaching, the time to act is now. This summit is about bringing together the people who can ignite change and giving them the tools, ideas and connections to make it happen.

“We’re thrilled to welcome speakers and experts from diverse fields. From psychology and sustainable agriculture to food repurposing and sustainability innovations in business. This is not just about talking; it's about taking tangible steps forward,” she says.

Massey Provost Professor Giselle Byrnes says the university is honoured to host such a nationally significant event.

“Massey is deeply committed to sustainability, equity and inclusion in everything we do, from our research and teaching to our everyday operations. Hosting the 2025 Aotearoa SDG Summit is a reflection of our leadership in this space, and an opportunity to spotlight the transformative work being done within our communities and beyond.”
