Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Massey Strategy
Massey seeks to weave Te Tiriti o Waitangi throughout its systems, structures and professional practice, reflecting the University's commitment to being Te Tiriti-led.
Rather than sitting alongside other priorities, Te Tiriti is an integral part of the University's direction, decision-making, relationships and ways of working.
The Strategy recognises iwi and Māori communities as strategic partners and affirms the importance of partnership, shared aspirations and collective impact. It also commits to ensuring that mātauranga Māori is valued, advanced and appropriately protected across the University's work.
The Strategy further supports Māori learner success, equitable outcomes, whānau wellbeing and organisational accountability. It recognises the University's responsibility to demonstrate its Te Tiriti commitments through leadership, capability, performance and continuous improvement.
What this means in practice
Massey's commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi includes:
- embedding Te Tiriti considerations into organisational systems, policies, planning and decision-making
- strengthening relationships with iwi, hapū and Māori communities
- supporting Māori learner participation, success and wellbeing
- valuing, advancing and protecting mātauranga Māori as a distinct and important knowledge system
- building staff capability and leadership to support Te Tiriti-led practice
- demonstrating accountability through evidence, monitoring and continuous improvement.
How the strategy and policy work together
The Massey Strategy sets the University's long-term direction and aspirations in relation to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy provides the policy framework that guides how these commitments are understood and applied across the University.
Together, they support Massey's commitment to being a Te Tiriti-led institution and to honouring its responsibilities to Māori learners, staff, whānau, iwi and communities.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy
Massey University's Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy remains the University's current policy setting out its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application across the institution.
Following the launch of the new Massey Strategy, the Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy is being reviewed to ensure its ongoing alignment with the University's strategic direction and aspirations.
Until a revised policy is approved, the current Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy remains in effect and continues to guide University practice, decision-making and development.
