Brunei oiled wildlife response training

Wildlife Response team members Bridey and Graeme travelled to Brunei in March 2015 to conduct an oiled wildlife response training session on behalf of Shell Brunei Petroleum.

The course was delivered to participants from local government and non-government agencies including staff from the wildlife division, forestry, conservation agencies, as well as not-for-profit groups with an environmental interest.

Brunei contains a number of large oil and gas projects and has real potential for an oil spill. Brunei Shell Petroleum have conducted a number of in-house training courses but this is the first training program specifically for oiled wildlife response held in the country.

The training was spilt into two components: introduction to management; and rehabilitation. It included lectures and scenario-based exercises. The participants were highly interactive and eager to learn. This is the first step in improving the readiness of Brunei wildlife personnel for any potential oil spill that impacts wildlife.
