Overview
This course builds on the foundation knowledge you learned in the Intermediate Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture short course.
It covers nutrient management, recent research and nutrient budgeting issues. You'll develop nutrient management plans that meet production goals for actual farm enterprises.
This course uses Overseer software.
You must complete four assignments over five months, fully participate in all online sessions and pass the two-hour examination on the final day.
To receive your Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture, you need complete both the Intermediate Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture and the Advanced Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture short courses.

Advisors responsible for safe and effective nutrient management. This course may also be helpful if you work in a role where it would be beneficial to know more about production issues and the agricultural sector.

This course is a prerequisite to the Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture.
The course was developed with the Fertiliser Association of New Zealand (FANZ) as part of the Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme.

What you'll get
After you complete the intermediate and advanced courses in Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture, you will receive a Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture.
Before taking this course
To enrol in this course, you must have successfully completed the Intermediate Sustainable Nutrient Management in New Zealand Agriculture short course.
You can apply for an exemption for this prerequisite if you have completed one of the following with a grade of 70% or higher:
- Massey University course 189362 Integrated Farm and Environmental Management
- Lincoln University course SOSC 340 Advanced Soil Management
You may also be granted an exemption if you can demonstrate prior knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices and experience with the Overseer Nutrient Budgets software.

Course content and structure
The course is online. You must participate in all sessions of the online course and spend up to 150 hours on self-study. There are four assignments and a two-hour exam on the final day.
The assignments include both pastoral and arable examples. They are case studies using the 'education version' of OverseerFM. You'll develop nutrient management plans that:
- meet production goals for actual farm enterprises
- minimise the negative effects of nutrient losses on the environment.
You'll also give a presentation of a personal case study enterprise and receive feedback from fellow participants and tutors.
Online tutorials will be available to discuss the case studies and reinforce concepts from the lectures.
