AI platforms

Use our interactive tool to see examples of Chicago style bibliography entries and footnotes for AI platforms.

According to the Chicago Manual of Style (18th ed):

  • You must credit AI in a footnote.
  • Although AI platforms assign unique URLs for chats and content generated, this is generally not publicly accessible – you should not include AI-generated text in your bibliography unless you can provide a URL that means other people can access the generated content. For example, through a browser extension like ShareGPT or A.I.Archives.
  • Your lecturer may require a bibliography entry – check with your lecturer if in doubt.

Warning: Know which level of the AI use framework applies to your assignment – if permitted to use AI, acknowledge it in your AI use statement. Be cautious citing sources generated by AI. It can create sources that do not exist. Check all sources generated by AI tools.

AI platforms include large cloud platforms like Azure AI or Google Cloud Vertex, as well as specialised tools like ChatGPT.

Note: The earlier (17th) edition of Chicago formats some elements differently.
