Academic writing in te reo Māori , He tuhinga pūmātauranga ki te reo māori

Find out the requirements for academic writing in te reo Māori, including where to get help with oral presentations.

Use of macrons tohutō

In Māori, macrons (tohotō) indicate how vowels should be pronounced. Vowels with macrons have a longer sound. Sometimes, words have double vowels which are different from tohutō. For example, ātaahua (beautiful), whakaahua (photograph).

To find out which vowels have macrons, search the Māori Dictionary.

Use of italics

If you are writing in English, italicise Māori words unless they are commonly known, for example, haka, hui, iwi, kai, kia ora, Pākeha, whānau.

APA style capitalisation

The recommendations for capitalisation in the 7th edition of APA Style are as follows:

  • Capitalise ethnic and racial groups. For example, Māori rather than māori.
  • Capitalise Indigenous and Indigenous People when referring to a group.
  • Do not capitalise the word people when referring to individuals.
