Beyond the plate: how protein quality shapes healthy ageing

By participating in the DIPO study, you will advance research that could improve nutrition guidelines and healthy ageing strategies in New Zealand, while also gaining unique knowledge about your own body.

About this study

Protein quality matters: 1 gram from 1 source is not equivalent to 1 gram from another.

Massey University in Auckland is running a research study on how different protein combinations influence lean body mass in older adults.

By taking part, you’ll receive valuable insights into your own health, including:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • HbA1c (blood sugar control)
  • fat mass and muscle mass
  • sustainability index (impact of your food choices on the environment)
  • habitual protein intake (your usual diet)
  • insights into how your body uses protein
  • the differences between animal and plant proteins for your health.

This information can give you a personalised picture of your nutrition, health and ageing.

Please share this opportunity with friends or whānau who may be interested.

Inclusion criteria

We are looking for healthy men and women who:

  • are aged 65 to 80 years
  • have a body mass index (BMI) of 23-30 kg/m2
  • pass the general health questionnaire
  • have a light to moderate physical activity level
  • are non-diabetic
  • provide written consent.

Incentives for participation

As a koha (gift) you will receive a $350 voucher upon completing the study.

Patient information

Download the participant information sheet to get detailed information about what’s involved when you participate in the EPiC study.

The information sheet will help you decide if you’d like to take part. It sets out:

  • why we are doing the study
  • what your participation would involve
  • what the benefits and risks to you might be
  • what would happen after the study ends.

We will go through this information with you and answer any questions you may have.

Before you decide you may want to talk about the study with other people, such as family, whānau, friends or healthcare providers. Feel free to do this. Whether or not you take part is your choice.
