Erroll Gibson
Erroll’s return to tertiary education wasn’t only about getting a new qualification, but fulfilling his desire to study something that could provide real opportunities, while allowing him to contribute more to society.
“What attracted me to accountancy was the potential to make a difference in organisations. Good financial information helps people make better decisions, whether that’s in a business, a charity or a government organisation.”
That interest eventually led him towards auditing, a field that combines technical accounting skills with values he says are important to him, including integrity, transparency, curiosity and public service.
“Public organisations are responsible for delivering services that affect the lives of New Zealanders every day. Auditing helps support that confidence by providing independent assurance that those organisations are managing resources responsibly.”
In his role as an Assistant Auditor, he examines the financial information, systems and controls of public sector organisations, which involves analysing data, gathering evidence, testing processes and working collaboratively with colleagues and clients.
“What excites me most is the opportunity to learn. No two organisations are the same, and every audit provides insight into how different public organisations operate and contribute to New Zealand society.”
While studying at Massey, Erroll also served as a class representative, was involved with the Student Staff Liaison Committee and volunteered with the Community Accounting Programme.
He says the programme gave him the opportunity to use his accounting knowledge to support community organisations.
“Working with community organisations facing financial challenges reminded me that accounting is ultimately about people, not just numbers. Those experiences helped me grow both professionally and personally. They strengthened my confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership skills.”
Erroll says his degree provided him with a pathway to transition into professional practice.
“My Massey qualification gave me a strong foundation in accounting, auditing, taxation, law, business analysis and importantly, ethics. It developed my technical accounting knowledge while also teaching me how to think critically, solve problems and communicate effectively.”
Erroll says the support he received from Massey staff also played an important role during his studies.
“Lecturers and professional staff were approachable and willing to provide help when needed. Knowing that support was available made a real difference, particularly during challenging periods.”
Looking back, Erroll says he is most proud of stepping outside his comfort zone and becoming involved in the university community.
“One thing I’d like people to take from my journey is that it’s never too late to pursue a new goal. Returning to university in my thirties was exciting and daunting, but Massey gave me the opportunity to build a new career and develop confidence in my abilities.”
