Varsity A were crowned the 2025 Hankins Shield champions, the top title in the Manawatū premier rugby competition.
Having wrapped up another successful season, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s sports clubs have showcased the talent and dedication of our student athletes through their passion for their sport.
The Massey University Rugby Club’s flagship side, Varsity A, were crowned the 2025 Hankins Shield champions, claiming the top title in the Manawatū premier rugby competition. Facing seven of the region’s strongest clubs, Varsity dropped just one game all season before taking out a thrilling final, defeating Kia Toa 29-27 to secure the coveted trophy.
After a tough semi-final exit in 2024, the team entered this year determined to make a statement – and did just that, combining discipline and composure under pressure. The Shield win marks the club’s second title in three years, having last lifted it in 2023.
It was a strong season across the board for the club, with Massey’s Senior B team, Rams, finishing fourth and the Under 85 kilogram Lambs earning an impressive second place in their respective competitions.
Massey’s Netball A1 side capped off another strong season, finishing as runners-up in the Premier 1 league after a hard-fought 54-48 final against Manukura. The result followed an impressive campaign that saw the team display consistency, determination and a strong attacking game.
Adding to the club’s success, four Massey players were selected for the Manawatū Open Women’s team, which competed at the New Zealand Championships in Christchurch in September – an achievement that recognises both their individual ability and the quality of the Massey Netball Club’s development pathway.

The Massey Premier Men’s Hockey team showed great resilience throughout a challenging season. After losing their relegation match at the beginning of the campaign, the team regrouped and worked hard to fight their way out of the bottom spot by the season’s end. Their commitment to improvement and strong team culture were standout features as they worked through the challenges to represent Massey on the turf.
Sport Massey Manager Angela Rainham says the winter results reflect not just sporting ability, but the character and camaraderie that define Massey’s sporting culture.
“It’s been a really strong winter season across the board. What stands out isn’t just the results, but the way our teams represent the university, always showing up with integrity and displaying great teamwork. From the rugby team’s championship win to the netballers’ impressive final and the hockey team’s resilience, these athletes have proven themselves dedicated and talented. Their achievements are a credit not only to themselves, but to their coaches, clubs and supporters who help make it all possible.”
