In response to increasing demand for artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally, Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University is introducing a new AI major, joining the popular subject areas of computer science, data science, information technology, software engineering and information systems. It will also be the first AI undergraduate major based at a New Zealand university, that can be completed entirely via distance, from anywhere in New Zealand or the world.

The AI major includes new courses designed to help students go beyond simply using AI, to understanding how it works and how it can be applied in the real world. It will also complement the other Bachelor of Information Science majors by expanding elective options and offering deeper exploration of AI and machine learning than is currently available.

As AI continues to grow at pace, so too does the demand for skilled professionals in the field. The new major will help meet that demand, equipping students with the technical skills needed to develop and deliver AI tools and to explain the methods that power them.

Head of School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences Professor Chris Scogings says the future of AI is vast and full of opportunity for those who want to shape technology and be part of a rapidly growing industry.

“We’ve designed this qualification with the future workforce in mind. Our graduates won’t just be users of AI, they’ll be the people creating it, managing it and making ethical decisions about how it’s applied. AI is already reshaping the way we live and work, and we’re seeing a surge of interest from prospective students who recognise its growing importance. The new major will equip them with the tools to not only understand AI but help build and guide its future. The new AI major perfectly complements our existing majors to provide students with an excellent pathway into the information and communication technology industry and beyond.”

The Bachelor of Information Sciences introduces students to the fundamentals of computer science in their first year. Because this foundational year is common across all majors, it provides a strong platform for moving into specialised study. From year two, students majoring in AI will delve into core topics in artificial intelligence and machine learning, including neural networks, natural-language processing and computer vision, complemented by core Computer Science topics such as programming, algorithms and computer languages.”

Massey is the only university in the country to offer six Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related majors in the same degree, allowing students to mix and match courses to suit their strengths and interests. Learn about the Bachelor of Information Sciences.
