Homecoming: Foreign-educated Returnees' Experience of Reentry into Chinese Universities in Yunnan Province, China

With the growing number of foreign-educated graduates returning to China, few studies have been done on what happens when they return, especially those who work in Chinese universities. In order to investigate the reentry experience of returnees employed in higher education institutions in Yunnan Province, China, Ms Wang interviewed 24 foreign-educated returnees, 11 non-returnees and nine management leaders. The purpose of her research was to get a multidimensional understanding about returnees' re-adaptation experience from these three groups. She found that returnees encountered challenges in re-adapting into Chinese universities, both academically and culturally. Chinese academic culture, administration systems and returnees' changing of cultural perceptions helped to influence returnees' reentry experiences. Returnees performed differently in dealing with these challenges they had to face. Those who had lower expectations and could readjust accordingly met less bitter experiences than those who had higher expectations and were slower to readjust.
