A lack of evidence-based benefits of prefabrication has limited its uptake in the New Zealand construction industry. Ms Shahzad examined the cost and time savings, and the productivity improvement achievable by the use of panelised prefabrication in place of the traditional building system. She found that up to 21 and 47 percent could be saved in project costs and completion times, respectively, across several building types and locations in New Zealand. Her results provide objectively-quantified benefits that clients and designers need to commit to the use of the technology. Knowledge from her research may encourage greater uptake of the technology which in turn could result in improved productivity performance within the building industry.
