Biomolecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids are chiral, which means they exist in one of two mirror images. Chirality is a prerequisite for life. Synthesising chiral molecules for real-life applications such as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and materials is a challenging process. Mr Mungalapara’s thesis aimed to develop novel synthetic methodologies to access chiral derivatives based on [2.2]paracyclophane, a planar chiral framework. Three different methods have been successfully developed to synthesise [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives, which can act as chiral ligands for asymmetric catalysis. Research carried out during his PhD has provided new and facile routes for synthesising chiral [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives, which were previously difficult to access. Many of these derivatives are novel and could be beneficial for the wider chemistry community.
