Analyzing seismic signals to understand volcanic mass flow emplacement

Volcanic mass flows are one of the most dangerous occurring geological phenomena due to their extreme runout distances that can directly affect a half a billion people worldwide. To better understand and prevent devastation from these events, Mr Walsh used geophysical instrumentation, along with techniques used to locate and estimate energy in real time. Specifically, he used multiple types of amplitude source location techniques to determine locations for volcanic phenomena. Additionally, Mr Walsh calibrated these methods to improve their estimates by using active man-made sources on Te Maari and White Island. His research enables future volcanic phenomena’s dynamics and locations to be determined more accurately, leading to more reliable warning and hazard estimation.
