Synthetic Test Patterns and Compression Artefact Distortion Metrics for Image Codecs

Electronic media such as digital still cameras squeeze image data, technically known as image compression, to save storage space. Mr Punchihewa proposed a method and tools for rapid evaluation of image compression distortions such as blockiness, blur, ringing and colour bleeding. The image compressor under examination was subject to a small set of test patterns designed to highlight the particular distortion being evaluated and distortion metrics were computed to evaluate the degree of distortion objectively
