School Improvement: The Route taken by an Urban Primary School in the Republic of Maldives.

Mr Didi explored how an urban primary school in the Maldives dealt with school improvement. Forty eight participants took part, of whom thirteen were students. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, document reviews and questionnaires. The findings suggest that, together, three major dimensions, namely change, leadership and culture, strengthened the improvement efforts in the school. In action-oriented terms, these dimensions translated into managing change, attending to specific leader actions and influencing the school’s culture. This Maldivian case study has made contributions to our understanding of school improvement efforts. First, it has highlighted specific aspects of school leadership that contribute more towards improvement than others. Second, schools should pursue sustainable change in order to reap long-term benefits. Both these areas require further research.
