Web, game and interactive research

Massey research in this area explores a broad range of digital platforms, investigating how people connect with media and how state-of-the-art technologies can challenge existing interactive models. Whether it is mobile- and web-apps, VR/AR experiences, interactive artworks, or games, our researchers seek to develop new critical insights and forms of creative expression, in pursuit of defining the future of digital media.

Research expertise

Character, concept and entertainment design

Our research explores the design of imaginary spaces for entertainment and education including worldbuilding, character design development and narrative structure. We also engage in game and play theory as a method of interactive engagement.

Game design

Iterative ideation drives our game design process with prototyping as the primary foundation. We utilise imaginative mechanics, rules, and loops to create a lasting core experience.

Immersive design

Our goal is to pursue the enhanced communication potential of virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality. Our researchers are seeking innovative methods for user engagement including: emergent narratives, visualisation, education, and game design.

Interactive design

Our goal is to understand human behaviour as it relates to traditional and digital forms of interactive communication. We explore UI/UX to find the best methods to connect people to other people, access information, and relate us to the digital products that pervade our lives.

Interactive spatial experiences

Our researchers undertake speculative explorations of interactive environments that use the potential of emerging technologies to conceptualise new worlds, create new experiences, and create or alter atmospheres.

Internet-of-things and networked media

Our researchers are investigating the effects and development of the connected environment and Internet of things. Through embedded microprocessing, wireless and Bluetooth connectivity, locative and augmented APIs, big data, and customised hardware, our staff have expertise in creating bespoke solutions for connected technology.

Design Co.

We believe New Zealand can be a better place if design and design thinking play a larger role in our social, cultural and economic future. To realise this potential, Massey University, AUT, Victoria University, Otago Polytechnic, The Designers Institute and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise have joined together to speak with a louder voice and advocate for the value of design in New Zealand.

Mixt Studio

Mixt is a Wellington-based content creation studio using transformative technology - science-based hardware and software that can produce positive changes in the human psychological experience - to create smarter, interactive ways to engage their users in the real, augmented and virtual worlds. Students at Massey have the opportunity to engage in collaborative projects with Mixt.
