This course provides an in-depth exploration of the changed nature of work in contemporary society. It examines the broader context of change, contemporary forms and patterns of work and occupations and issues and perspectives on global and local labour markets.

  • 1 Understand the evolution of work in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).
  • 2 Demonstrate understanding of theoretical debates on the implications of AI in the workplace through their application to real-world examples, that may include the role of capitalist economy, the restructuring of labour power and emotional labour, ethics and regulation, environmental impacts, and social change.
  • 3 Demonstrate understanding of AI’s impact on work and working lives in Aotearoa/New Zealand that may include employment patterns, cultural expectations, job quality and organisational structures.
  • 4 Conduct critical research on AI-related topics using academic and non-academic sources.
