'Porn Literacy' as Pedagogy? Understanding and Responding to Young People's Engagement with Internet Pornography
To ultimately promote their sexual and psychological health and well-being, the aim of this research is to understand how Internet pornography shapes young New Zealanders’ sexual socialisation as a gendered process. Exploring this from the perspectives of young people, this research will investigate how they interpret the representations displayed in IP in relation to normative sexual scripts, and what their needs are regarding porn literacy education according to key stakeholders (16-18 year olds, caregivers, and educators). This research is funded by a Massey University Doctoral Scholarship.
The findings from this project will offer a significant contribution to the body of knowledge that currently exists regarding sexual education, porn literacy, and young people. In addition, it hears and takes seriously the youth voice, as this voice has been largely missing in previous studies.
I aim to contribute to the wider psychological research environment through the provision of valuable research outputs that might serve to inform policy related to the sexual health and well-being of youth.
I am originally from Ireland, and moved to New Zealand in 2017 to take up a Graduate Assistant position and doctoral research opportunity at Massey. I hope to pursue postdoctoral research upon the completion of my PhD in 2021, and continue to explore gender, youth and ‘good’ sexual citizenship in today’s technological cultural context through person centred, critical research methods.
