Benchmarking is a methodology for comparing performance and practices with other organisations, learning from this and implementing better practices to improve performance. Benchmarking can be undertaken formally and informally. Despite a plethora of studies indicating the informal use of benchmarking by the school sector, the literature often does not label its use as benchmarking. It was found that school systems and schools are unknowingly using informal benchmarking and are achieving improved performance from its use. It was envisaged that school systems and schools are able to obtain greater improvements through the systematic use of benchmarking. Mrs Malik developed a framework to introduce school systems and schools to benchmarking and its systematic application for achieving greater improvements. Her research will assist the school sector to more effectively identify and implement best practices.
