Migrant Women's Career Capital
Skilled migrant women comprise almost half of the skilled migrants approved permanent residency in New Zealand, and they bring with them skills, qualifications and experience that are highly advantageous to organisations in today's competitive marketplace. However, their skills are often under-utilised, and while this has repercussions for the migrant women themselves, it can cost organisations substantially in lost productivity. Although some studies have explored the career experiences of skilled migrant women, relatively little is known about the complex interplay of factors that shape their career pathways. To address this gap, my study aims to provide a deeper contextual understanding of the career experiences of skilled migrant women in New Zealand by exploring their experiences through the lens of contemporary career theories. This study aims to make two key contributions by providing a more nuanced understanding of the career experiences of skilled migrant women and developing a more inclusive career theory that captures the experiences of skilled migrant women.
Auckland is home to approximately 1.3 million people, with approximately 39% of Auckland residents born overseas. This makes Auckland the world's fourth most cosmopolitan city. Furthermore, the feminization of migration flows into New Zealand is not well documented, with little known about the drivers behind gendered migration to this country.
I completed my Masters at Massey University in 2011, and the experience was so amazing that I was absolutely determined to come back to do my PhD here. With a young son it was easy to always find a reason to hold off until the next year, and then the next year. But now I am here, I know that this is where I want to be. When I finish my PhD I hope to move into academia as a career.
