Decoding the DNA of working farm dogs for welfare and performance

The right dog for the job! We're looking for participants in a Massey University research project decoding the DNA of working farm dogs for welfare and performance.

In partnership with MPI as part of the SFF Futures fund, Massey University has embarked on a research project to understand the genetics of New Zealand’s iconic Huntaway and Heading dog working breeds.

The programme recognises that New Zealand farm dogs are unique in the world, where New Zealand farmers have selected dogs to perform on farms over generations. However the uniqueness of these dogs means that very little is known about them at the DNA level, with Huntaways and Heading Dogs absent from the large genetic studies conducted on other breeds overseas.

About the study

We are aiming to conduct the first in-depth genetic studies of NZ working farm dogs. The project has several key objectives:

  • Use whole-genome sequencing to give a high-resolution view of the DNA of Huntaways and Heading dogs. This approach will show which genetic disease variants found in international breeds are also carried by our dogs, presenting options for future testing.
  • Genotyping and trait measurements on large numbers of working dogs. This work aims to discover:
    • New disease variants specific to Huntaways and/or Heading dogs
    • Variants impacting working performance in these breeds

Participate in the study

We are looking for study participants - humans and dogs - when we begin sampling activities later this year. Participating dogs will be DNA sampled and measured for basic physical traits (for example, bodyweight, coat type etc.). Owners will be surveyed on the health history, working attributes, and behavioural characteristics of their dogs.

To help us formulate the owner survey, please tell us which traits are most important to you!

If you are keen to participate, please email us, and we will be in touch rightdog@massey.ac.nz

What's in it for you (and your dog)?

Participating owners will get a free genotype profile of their dog. This will give an indication of which disease variants your dog may carry (or be clear of). We will also share research findings with participants as the project evolves. Ultimately participants will also be helping ensure the future of NZ working farm dogs by providing information on Huntaway and Heading Dog genetics, enabling the selection of healthier, higher performance dogs in the future.
