Introductory Mathematics for Science

An introductory course focusing on the development of mathematical problem solving skills in science contexts. The use of number, algebra, trigonometry, and curve sketching will be employed in different situations to solve problems and interpret results.

Course code

Qualifications are made up of courses. Some universities call these papers. Each course is numbered using six digits.

160104

Level

The fourth number of the course code shows the level of the course. For example, in course 219206, the fourth number is a 2, so it is a 200-level course (usually studied in the second year of full-time study).

100-level

Credits

Each course is worth a number of credits. You combine courses (credits) to meet the total number of credits needed for your qualification.

Learning outcomes

What you will learn. Knowledge, skills and attitudes you’ll be able to show as a result of successfully finishing this course.

  • 1 Apply the concepts and techniques of number to science contexts, including order of operations, fractions, unit conversion, estimations and approximations.
  • 2 Apply the concepts and techniques of algebra and trigonometry to science contexts, including the use of exponential and logarithmic functions.
  • 3 Draw and interpret graphs.
  • 4 Use computer software (such as Excel) to carry out graphical, numerical and symbolic explorations.
  • 5 Communicate solutions to scientific problems in appropriate mathematical language/symbols, including using correct SI units.

Learning outcomes can change before the start of the semester you are studying the course in.
