# Data Analysis

Biology, psychology, and other sciences require statistical methods for analysing and visualising data. This course is designed to be accessible to students from any discipline, first building a deeper understanding of fundamental statistical concepts, then teaching a range of practical approaches for exploring statistical relationships, testing hypotheses, evaluating models, and presenting conclusions.

• 1 Describe the sources of variation in populations and samples, the objectives of statistical inference, and the Central Limit Theorem.
• 2 Describe different types of data and random variables and summarise using statistics and graphics.
• 3 Implement and interpret results of statistical tests of hypotheses, using Student’s t-statistic and chi-square tests.
• 4 Use statistical software to analyse data using a range of statistical models, and summarise and interpret the results.
• 5 Evaluate the assumptions of parametric statistical analyses and apply transformations or nonparametric/permutation tests where appropriate.
