Māori Resource and Environmental Management - Whenua

This course offers the opportunity for postgraduate students to learn and apply Māori concepts, values and science processes to the management of whenua or land and whenua sustainability. These values will be discussed in context with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and present day legislation. Case studies will be undertaken to develop skills in the management of Māori whenua or land resources.

  • 2 Demonstrate a thorough understanding of fundamental Māori concepts including; whakapapa, tikanga and kaitiakitanga.
  • 3 Relate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to land management.
  • 4 Understand the impact of legislation (historical and contemporary) on Māori land resources and values, specifically the Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and Resource Management Act.
  • 5 Compare the traditional approaches to Māori knowledge and the methodologies of modern science disciplines.
  • 6 Access appropriate resources to prepare essays or reports on topics associated with Māori and land resources.
