Physiological Strategies for Survival

Survival of individual animals, and species of animals, depends on effective physiological mechanisms that allow animals to live in different environments and to respond to changes in their environment, whether benign or extreme. These mechanisms are examined in relation to environmental factors that may include photoperiod, temperature, altitude, and latitude, and in relation to life in the air and underwater.

  • 1 Describe the basic principles of neurophysiology, cardio-respiratory physiology, renal physiology and reproductive physiology in vertebrate animals
  • 2 Relate the sensory and other neurophysiological adaptations of various animals to their diet and lifestyle
  • 3 Compare and contrast different reproductive strategies and explain how they relate to the animals’ particular social and environmental challenges
  • 4 Explain how adaptations of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems allow some animals to perform endurance locomotion, dive for extended periods, live at high altitude, and fly
  • 5 Explain how adaptations of the renal and other physiological systems allow animals to achieve water balance
  • 6 Gather, collate and critically evaluate scientific information to support a logical and cohesive discussion of links between structure/function and environmental challenges
