How to create and view your Turnitin report
This online tutorial outlines the steps for submitting and reviewing a Turnitin report.
How to interpret your Turnitin report
This online tutorial helps you understand how to interpret your Turnitin report.
Turnitin is a web-based tool that detects AI-generated and plagiarised text. It looks for patterns of words and sentences typical of AI-generated text and text already published. It matches text with common phrases, names, theories and quotes for plagiarism.
A plagiarism check generates a Similarity Index score and sometimes a Similarity Report. Your score reveals the percentage of your work matching text in Turnitin's database. Good referencing skills and an understanding of plagiarism are crucial.
How to upload a draft to Turnitin
If your course uses Turnitin, upload your assignment to Turnitin through Stream using the dropbox you submit your assignment for final grading.
Sometimes, lecturers will let you upload a draft before you submit it for final grading. In this case, you can check your Turnitin score and change your assignment before submitting it. However, sometimes when you upload your assignment for final grading, it's also submitted to Turnitin. When this happens, you won't be able to make any changes to your assignment.
Check with your lecturer or course coordinator about how they have set up Turnitin access before you submit your assignment.
Uploading a draft to Turnitin
1, Log in to Stream.
Navigate to the dropbox you submit your assignment for final grading.
2, Upload or drag and drop your draft assignment into the dropbox.
An on-screen notification will tell you the uploaded file is in draft status.
3, Check the Submission Status and File Submissions fields on the Turnitin page.
On the Turnitin page, the submitted file is waiting for review when the following fields display these messages:
- Submission status: 'Draft (not submitted)'
- File submissions: 'Turnitin status: Queued'
4, Check your inbox for an email notification the report is ready.
You will be notified by email when your Turnitin report is ready.
Generating a score and report can take a few minutes or several hours. If you have not received an email notification after 24 hours that a score and report are ready, you should contact your lecturer or course coordinator.
Note: once you submit your assignment, you will need to contact your lecturer to make any changes.
How to review a Turnitin report and resubmit a draft
1, Log in to Stream
Navigate to the dropbox.
2, Check the score in the red button box of the File submissions field.
When the report is ready, a percentage number in a coloured box replaces the queued Turnitin status. The percentage reveals how much of your assignment matches other text.
3, Click the coloured box to see your Turnitin report.
The report highlights matched text and identifies its source.
Remember, Turnitin matches text with common phrases, names, theories and quotes, so a high percentage doesn't necessarily mean you have plagiarised. If your assignment follows a lecturer-provided template, the percentage may also increase.
If you need to make changes, you can upload your updated assignment draft again.
3a, Upload your updated draft assignment by clicking the Edit submission button.
The Edit submission button is above the coloured percentage box. A new box will appear with your original file, which you can download or delete.
If you upload a new file, the Turnitin review will start again, generating a new percentage and report.
4, Click the Submit assignment button to submit for grading.
When you are ready to submit for grading, click the Submit assignment button below the Edit submission button.
Once you have submitted your assignment for grading, you will need to contact your lecturer to make any changes.
