A Quantum Leap in Informal Benchmarking
Read article at Massey Research Online:
As an organisational improvement initiative, informal benchmarking or informally learning from others to improve work practices, is not nearly as effective as it is popular. Mr Samuel sought to provide a deeper understanding of informal benchmarking and demonstrate a need to render it more effective. By using a pragmatic mixed methods approach of surveys followed by interviews, a conceptual model and a roadmap was developed for its effective and sustainable implementation. Additionally, he found that informal benchmarking may be deployed as a stand-alone or as a complement to formal benchmarking projects. In view of the lack of available literature, the research is a pioneering academic study. It publicises the first empirically-based theoretical model of, and a practical roadmap for, the effective execution of informal benchmarking in organisations.
