Kāinga Rua is ideal for young adults aged 17 to 20. Choose from standard single rooms or spacious large rooms, each featuring a private ensuite bathroom. Wifi access is available in all rooms and common areas. Relax and socialise in our shared lounges and kitchens, or unwind in the outdoor courtyard.

Our Wellington halls are self-catered, however you can purchase a meal package for the Tussock cafe if you prefer to have your meals provided.

Kāinga Rua is just a short walk to Massey University’s Wellington campus, the city centre, public transport links and the Massey gym.

Car parking spaces are available for priority car users.

Kāinga Rua’s spacious rooms are accessed from an external walkway surrounding a beautiful central courtyard, halls of residence style.

Our large single rooms offer more storage possibilities, and are suited to residents who need more equipment for their courses.

Here's what you can expect in each fully furnished single room:

  • Double bed – rest comfortably on a spacious double bed, complete with a mattress and mattress protector for a good night's sleep.
  • Ensuite bathroom with shower
  • Small fridge
  • Study area – study from the comfort of your own room. Your room includes a designated study desk, chair, and desk light.
  • Shelf, pinboard, and wardrobe with a mirror – you will have plenty of storage space for your clothes, books, and personal items.
  • Heater – for a cozy and comfortable living environment year-round.
  • Privacy and security – enjoy peace of mind with a lockable door, ensuring privacy and security for each resident.

At Massey, we promote autonomy and independence in maintaining a tidy and organised living space. You are responsible for cleaning your own room.

By bringing along these essential items, you'll be well-prepared for your stay in Kāinga Rua hall and can settle in comfortably from day one:

  • Bedding and towels – ensure a comfortable sleep by bringing your own bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillows. Don't forget to pack towels for personal use.
  • Clothing hangers – keep your wardrobe organized with clothing hangers for hanging clothes in your wardrobe.
  • Toiletries and toiletries bag – bring along your toiletries, such as toothpaste, shampoo, and soap, and store them in a toiletries bag for easy access.
  • Laundry basket – stay organized with a laundry basket for collecting dirty clothes and transporting them to the laundry facilities.
  • Laundry powder – stock up on laundry powder to keep your clothes clean and fresh throughout your stay.
  • Cleaning products – keep your living space tidy by bringing cleaning products such as surface cleaner and wipes.
  • Cooking utensils, pots and pans, additional plates, bowls, cups and cutlery if you have guests visiting – Kāinga Rua is self-catered. Bring everything you need to prepare and enjoy your own meals.

Wellington halls are self-catered, but if you prefer the convenience of catering, you can opt for a Tussock meal package on Massey Campus.

Purchase your meals at Tussock Café using your Hospitality meal package ID card. You can choose to dine in or take away.

Your meal package gives you a $60 weekly credit from orientation week onwards. Unused credits accrue during study weeks only and expire on the last exam day of the year/semester.

Kāinga Rua consists of 2 blocks, Whare and Nui, which each house their own common spaces and can be shared by residents of the halls. These include:

  • Shared lounge – relax on couches and enjoy TV entertainment.
  • Dining area – tables and chairs provide a perfect space for meals and socialising.
  • Large kitchens – equipped for self-catering students, our large kitchens are open 24/7.
  • Movie room – enjoy movie nights with projectors and cozy bean bags.
  • Art Room – a space for art projects both personal and uni-related.

Kāinga Rua also has a central outdoor courtyard featuring a lush lawn, picnic tables, and a basketball hoop for leisure and exercise.

Kāinga Rua offers 20 car parking spaces. When accepting your offer, you can indicate if you would like a car park. Priority is given to students who need a car park for their studies.

For those who prefer biking, bicycles can be stored for free at our convenient outdoor bike rack.

Payment options

  • Full pre-payment – Pay your entire accommodation fees in one payment, either by semester or for the full year.
  • Semester payments – Pay your accommodation fees in two instalments, one prior to the start of each semester.
  • Weekly payments (domestic students only) – Domestic students may choose to pay via direct debit, with an advance payment followed by weekly instalments.

When your application for accommodation is successful, you will receive an official offer. To secure your place in the halls, you must:

  • Pay the required deposit
  • Complete and return the Residential Agreement.

Both must be completed by the offer expiry date stated in your offer letter.

Please note: this deposit is in addition to your Accommodation Fees.

Payment process

Follow the instructions provided in your offer email to make the deposit payment to secure your place in Studios. Payment methods and deadlines will be outlined in the offer letter.

Once your deposit is received and processed, you will receive your confirmation of place, Accommodation Fees invoice and further instructions about move-in dates and procedures.

Withdrawal and refund eligibility

Withdrawal and refund eligibility

To secure a refund of the bond, mattress protector and activity fee, you must cancel before the specified deadline. The processing fee is non-refundable and will not be included in the refund amount.

  • Returning halls residents – cancellations must be received by 1 December 2025.
  • New hall residents – cancellations must be received by 23 January 2026.
