Rooms and furniture
Rooms
Kāinga Rua’s spacious rooms are accessed from an external walkway surrounding a beautiful central courtyard, halls of residence style.
Our large single rooms offer more storage possibilities, they are suited to residents who need more equipment for their courses.
Each room includes:
- a double bed
- ensuite bathroom with shower (residents must supply their own shower curtain)
- secure, lockable doors and windows that open
- radiator heating
- wardrobe
- desk and chair
- shelving
- small fridge.
Items you should bring
Along with clothing and personal items, you should also bring:
- Bed linen, including pillows, comforter/duvet (you can order a bedding pack when you accept your offer of place)
- Towels
- Coat hangers
- Toiletries and toiletry bag
- Laundry basket
- Laundry powder/liquid
- Cleaning products
- An electric fan for the summer
- Shower curtain
- Toilet brush
- Cutlery
- Crockery (cups, plates, bowls)
- Cooking utensils
- Chopping board
- Saucepans and frying pans
- Container to take your items to the kitchen.
Catering
Kainga Rua is self-catered accommodation, however you can purchase a Tussock meal package on Massey Campus.
Meals are served at Tussock Café, located in the heart of the campus or they can be taken away. The café offers a diverse range of food options, simply order with everybody else but pay by presenting your Hospitality meal package ID card.
Your meal package provides you with a $60 credit for each week of the term from orientation week onwards. If you don't use the full credit each week it will be accrued during study weeks only, and expires on the last exam day of the year/semester.

Communal spaces
Kāinga Rua has two common areas shared by residents of the hall’s two blocks, which are called Whare and Nui.
Both include a spacious lounge with couches and a TV, dining area with several tables and chairs, large kitchens for self-catering students, a separate movie room with projectors and bean bags, and games. Kitchens are open daily from 7am to 10pm.
Kāinga Rua has a central outdoor courtyard with a lawn, picnic tables and a basketball hoop. Shared laundries are $3 per wash and $3 per dry.
Car parking and bike storage
Kāinga Rua has 28 car parks. You can indicate whether you would like a car park when accepting your offer. We prioritise nursing students/ students who require a car park for their studies.
Bicycles can be stored for free at an outdoor bike rack.
Public transport
Kāinga Rua's central Wellington location is close to many major transport links, including the city’s bus network, trains and ferries.
Alcohol
Kāinga Rua allows moderate drinking in the common lounge areas only on the allocated evenings of Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during permitted hours. However, spirits and hard liquors, and alcohol in large quantities such as beer kegs, crates or casks of wine, are not allowed.

- electricity (residents who use more than a reasonable amount of electricity will be charged extra)
- gym membership at the Massey Recreation Centre
- an activity fee that contributes to social events and activities at Kāinga Rua throughout the academic year.
Payment options
You can pre-pay by semester or full year. Domestic students are also able to pay on a weekly basis by direct debit.
Deposit
After you have applied for accommodation and your application has been successful, you will need to pay a deposit by the offer expiry date stated in your letter of offer to secure your place.
The deposit is $762 for a full year or $722 for one semester.

To secure a refund of the bond, mattress protector and activity fee, cancellations must be received by :
- 1 December 2023 for returning halls residents
- 22 January 2024 for new hall residents.
The processing fee is non-refundable.

2024 occupancy
Your accommodation contract term must reflect your study programme – if your programme of study is full year you must apply for full year accommodation.
