Te Rau Tauawhi – Māori Student Centre
Ko tā Te Rau Tauawhi he manaaki i te tauira kia puta te ihu, kia angitu.
Te Rau Tauawhi was founded on tikanga Māori principles of whānaau, manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and mātauranga. We offer various services and opportunities to get the most out of your Massey experience, including:
- general learning support and advice
- help with course planning
- mentoring
- writing workshops
- avenues for support with writing and numeracy
- opportunities to meet staff and students in welcoming spaces.
Te Rau Tauawhi is one of many initiatives that support Māori undergraduate students, such as:

Māori student centre (Te Whare Taupua) – Ōtehā campus

Events and activities
We host events on each campus most weeks – like our 'Kai and kōrero' events, which are a great place for whakawhanungatanga.
Events and activities are also offered by Ngā Haumi ki te Ao, your Māori students' association at Massey University. They deliver a range of free services to help you thrive during your time at university – including representation, student clubs and events.
Te Rau Puawai – Māori mental health workforce development programme
Ka tukuna e Te Rau Puawai mā te tautoko hoki o Health Workforce New Zealand he karahipi hei tautoko i ngā tauira e whai ana i ngā tohu e hāngai ana ki te hauora hinengaro Māori.
Te Rau Puawai, in partnership with Te Whatu Ora (Health New Zealand), provides bursaries and learning support to Massey students working towards a qualification in the field of Māori mental health. This can be at any level – undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral.
We expect that Te Rau Puawai students will contribute towards improving Māori mental health by gaining employment in a relevant field after graduation. To help you get there, we offer, an administrator and director, Pou ā Rongo (mentor) who all provide advice and general learning support.

Our Pūkenga Reo embrace the notion that the Māori language is the foundation of every aspect of the Māori world, the Māori language conveys Māori perspective and empowers Māori identity.

Kaitautoko Māori in the Colleges
Kaitautoko Māori support you in the College that your qualification is in. They'll help you navigate your studies and stay on track through both academic and pastoral support.
