Pathways to a degree
Take the first step to a Massey degree by completing a foundation qualification or pre-degree pathway in your country. Or you can choose to study a pre-degree pathway in another country.
How pre-degree pathways work
Study a pre-degree pathway with our partner institutions for either six months or 12 months. A pre-degree pathway helps you meet the entry requirements to apply to Massey.
Once you meet our entry requirements, you can apply for a degree or other qualification as an international student. You are guaranteed a place as long as you meet our English language requirements.
Depending on your pathway, you may be able to get recognition of prior learning from your foundation qualification when you apply to Massey. This means using credits from your foundation qualification towards your study with Massey.
Entry requirements for international students
Why take a pathway
A pre-degree pathway is a qualification that helps you meet the entry requirements for a degree. A pathway can be a foundation or university preparation course, or a diploma. Foundation courses give you the academic skills needed to study a degree, such as reading critically, making notes and referencing.
Studying an English-language foundation course helps you prepare to study your degree in English. You may also be able to study special English courses in some pathways.
If you want to study a certain degree or subject, you may be able to choose a special foundation course to help you prepare for that. For example, you could study a business pathway to help you get ready for a business degree.
Or you can study a foundation pathway and English language course with us in New Zealand. As an international student, you can choose from pathways in business, humanities and social sciences, science, health and creative arts.

Degree transfer pathways
Start studying at one of our partner institutions outside New Zealand and then transfer to Massey. You complete your degree with us in New Zealand.
How degree transfer pathways work
When you enrol at one of our partner universities, you can choose to transfer to a Massey campus to complete your degree. Degree transfer pathways are also known as articulation pathways.
Check the Massey degree or qualification you're interested in before starting your degree transfer pathway. You need to make sure you study the right courses so you can move on to the Massey degree you want.
When you transfer to Massey in a degree transfer pathway, we recognise what you have studied so far. This means you:
- transfer using credits from your degree study in our partner university when you enrol at Massey
- go straight into the next year of your degree instead of starting in the first year of a Massey degree.
When you complete your study with us, you are awarded a Massey degree.

When you finish your Massey degree, the university where you started your transfer pathway may also give you a degree.
