Collaboration on the SDGs
Between 2020 and 2024, Massey University co-authored one short of 5,000 publications on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) topics (Scopus database extracted using SciVal data October 2025). On average, more than half (59%) of these publications were in collaboration with international researchers.
These included research with the World Health Organisation, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and many Aotearoa New Zealand research institutions, government agencies and corporations.
Topics ranged from building sustainable and resilient cities to public health, ensuring food and resource sustainability, reducing inequality and wildlife conservation.

Massey hosts Sustainability Development Goals summit
In September 2025, Massey hosted the Aotearoa National Sustainable Development Goals Summit at its Manawatū campus. With the theme “Getting it right! Sustainable production and consumption in Aotearoa”, the summit brought together changemakers from across the country for 2 days of keynote talks, panels, workshops and discussions. Topics included climate justice, te ao Māori approaches, social equity and systems change.
The summit built on momentum from a 2024 lead-in event, titled “How to achieve the SDGs? Let’s ask Nature”, which brought together government agencies, NGOs, universities and community groups to explore nature-based and collaborative approaches to sustainability.
Both events reflect Massey’s ongoing leadership in this space, following its hosting of the Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS) conference in 2022. That conference, The Future of Sustainability, brought together sustainability champions from campus communities across Australasia and the Pacific to share and inspire transformative action toward a fair, just and equitable future for all.

Climate Scenarios project wins Green Gown award
In 2024, the Tertiary Education Sector Climate Futures Group won the prestigious ‘Powerful Partnerships’ Green Gown award for its groundbreaking Climate Scenarios Project. The project explores how climate change could impact tertiary education.
Massey played a key role in the project, with staff contributing at every level – from Senior Leadership Team sponsorship to serving on the advisory group and the core project team.
Global One Health Research Partnership programme
In 2023, Massey hosted a 4-day Global One Health Research Partnership programme, which brought together Massey’s One Health researchers, international partners, government scientists and the New Zealand One Health research community. One Health aims to improve health outcomes by recognising, understanding and managing the relationships between people, animals and their shared environment.
Global health partnerships tackle AMR
In 2024, the Fleming Fund awarded $2.3 million to Massey for an antimicrobial resistance project led by Dr Joanna McKenzie. The One Health project focuses on enhancing the monitoring and reporting of antibiotic resistance and use in animals, aquatic species, food and the environment. It engages farmers and animal health practitioners across multiple countries.
KIWI Challenge partnership
Massey partnered with Education New Zealand on the KIWI Challenge Competition, an annual entrepreneurship competition for Indonesian students. In 2022, Sustainable Business and Entrepreneurship in the Tourism Industry was the challenging theme.

Good Impressions charity initiative
In 2023, through the Good Impressions charity initiative, Massey actively donated advertising value to digital billboards for organisations advocating social change across New Zealand. Beneficiaries included I Am Hope, Forest and Bird, Māori Women’s Development Inc and Sustainable Coastlines.
Virtual SDG programme
As part of Massey’s Global Citizen programme, some students undertook a Virtual SDG programme to learn more about the Sustainable Development Goals. Participants worked in global teams and worked on an SDG Challenge Project.
The university was part of the team that won the 2022 challenge. The prize included a certificate for trees, which will be planted in Nepal by Eden Reforestation projects.

International symposium on global nutrition
The world’s leading experts on protein, including several New Zealand scientists, met in Utrecht in September 2023 to discuss ways to address the nutritional needs of a burgeoning world population. The International Symposium: Dietary Protein for Human Health was co-organised by Massey’s Riddet Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and Wageningen University, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
China-NZ Horticulture symposium focuses on sustainability
The second China–New Zealand Joint Symposium in Horticulture, co-organised by Massey and Northeast Agricultural University in 2024, focused on climate change, sustainable agribusiness and cooperative models.
The event fostered deeper collaboration between the 2 countries and featured the signing of a Joint Lab Agreement to support transformative, cross-border research in horticulture and sustainability.
