Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the term given to granting credit based on formal and informal learning. Credit can be awarded for completed tertiary qualifications from Massey or other institutions, for incomplete tertiary qualifications from other institutions, and from informal learning. It can be applied to your proposed current study with Massey University and will be awarded at an appropriate level for the content of the qualifying course.

How to apply

New students

You can apply for RPL when you apply for admission into your chosen programme of study.

Admitted and current students

Once you have accepted an Offer of Place, or are a current student, you can apply by:

  1. Logging into the student portal.
  2. Clicking the Qualifications and courses tab.
  3. Clicking the Apply for credit link in the Previous tertiary study / Apply for credit section.
  4. Completing the following pages.

Types of RPL that can be applied for

Application based on formal learning

When you apply for RPL based on formal learning and you have paid the application fee, your application will be assessed to determine if you are eligible for cross-credit or transfer of credit:

  1. Cross-credit - refers to credit from a completed qualification and added to another qualification.
  2. Transfer of credit - refers to credit from an incomplete qualification and transferred to another qualification.

Application based on informal learning

When you apply for RPL based on informal learning and you have paid the application fee, your application will be assessed to acknowledge relevant and appropriate skills and knowledge obtained through training, work experience and life experience. For example:

  1. Massey University professional development courses.
  2. Other learning/experience based on work experience and/or formal training.
