Research expertise

Equity through education

Our research focuses on educational inequity and aims to break down barriers to learning and promote equity in and through education. We work with and for communities to identify and enact innovative and responsive solutions to educational equity.

Instructional communication

Research includes class instruction and its effect on communication apprehension, self-perceived communication competence, and willingness to communicate motivation to achieve in school. International education and communication, teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Learning for living

Learning and personal development are integral to the human condition. Both learning and teaching are integral to life as a social being. This research rōpu explores how people of all ages learn through the ordinary activities and relations that make up their everyday lives.

Literacy education

Our research is based on the view that literacy instruction should be holistic, child-focused, individualised and evidential using the affordances of culture, relationships, family aspirations and context to build self-agency and a positive attitude towards reading and writing.

Mathematics education

We work on a common theme: the place of mathematics education and its transformative potential in New Zealand, the Pacific region and the world. A focus on equity and cultural responsiveness underwrites our research projects and the developmental work we engage in with teachers, schools, and communities.

Mixed methods research in education

Mixed methods research is a relatively new research methodology which integrates qualitative and quantitative data in the same study. This builds on the strengths of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and mitigates against the weaknesses, allowing a fuller examination of a research context or problem.

Scholarship of teaching and learning

The scholarship of teaching and learning is an approach that views all learning spaces as sites for enquiry, innovation, problem-solving, and knowledge-building. We are researching contemporary teaching and learning challenges using enquiry, reflection and evidence-based methods to enhance learner outcomes and improve practice.
